Kuliah Umum "Dinamika Laut Indonesia" General Lecture “Indonesian Ocean Dynamics”
Faculty of Marine and Fishery (FKP), Udayana University held General Lecture with a theme of “Indonesian Ocean Dynamics” that was presented by Dr. Dwi Susanto on Monday, at the 25th of February 2013 in the Hall building of FKP. He is an expert of oceanography from Indonesia that presently is working at the country of Uncle Sam, which is at Lamon Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, New York, USA. On that general lecture, he also told the variety of researches he has done in Indonesian Seas. The significance of flow circulation and World Climate are also explained, where water mass of Pacific Ocean runs into Indonesian seas through Makassar Strait and runs out through Lombok Strait, Ombai Strait, and Timor seas. That flow pattern is often called Indonesia Trough Flow (ITF). According to Dr. Dwi Susanto, climate condition in Indonesia is very much affected by the oceanic condition in Pacific and Hindia Ocean, which is similar to the phenomenon of El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO in Pacific Ocean) and Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (IOD in Hindia Ocean). Indonesian Ocean Dynamics that is affected by phenomenon in those two oceans will have its effect to the fishery resources potential in Indonesia. Therefore, better researches are needed to optimally and continuously extract fishery resources that we have, so community in Indonesia would be more prosper. To this moment, Dr. Dwi Susanto along with his team are also studying on water mass exchange that occur in South China seas and runs to Indonesian seas, which is called SITE program (South China Sea-Indonesia Sea Transport/exchange through Karimata Sea and Sunda Trait). Compared to ITF, the flow from South China sea and the one that through Sunda Strait are relatively small; even though it has a significant role for Indonesia, particularly the season variability. In the event of ending his lecture that went for at least 2 hours long, Dr. Dwi Susanto ask the students in Faculty of Marine and Fishery, Udayana University to participate in researches that he will lead in the future, and simultaneously improve the relationship to universities all over America.
